Jan 04, 2018 · First, the pulley and gear that DHector photographed is off of the Atlas 3950 lathe and has the small spindle gear on the opposite end of the pulley from where it is on all of the Atlas mills and other lathes. It has a Clausing style part number. The 3950 is the Atlas replacement for the 618, which went into production in about 1973.

The other one is a cobbled up affair (hense the name) of a stripped down horizontal Atlas with a Bridgeport M head mounted using the over arm support and driven by a treadmill motor and equipped with an XY DRO from modified Grizzly scales. The MFC is the the best equipped of the Atlas millers.

This is a very nice atlas MFC horizontal milling machine. It is intact and fully functional. There are no broken castings. This mill has the 32 speed table feed option. It needs a new drive belt and some minor adjustments for the back gear.

I've seen a few photos of the Atlas horizontal mill and I notice that most small mills are now verticals . . Jul 03, 2017 · Without wanting to pour cold water on this, I bought this for £200 on EBay, I had considered building a vertical head for my Atlas but this was a lot easier and is waaaay more ridged and probably cost less than the upgrades would have done. If you're looking for a base to build a mill from then there's an Atlas horizontal laying unloved in my workshop.....
